Logical Investigations. Volume 2, Part 2 Elements of Phenomenological Clarification of Knowledge
In the concluding, VI investigation, which constitutes the second part of the second volume of «Logical Investigations», the main aspects of the phenomenological analysis of knowledge are highlighted. The initial distinction of the first section lies between objectifying (representation, judgment)...
and non-objectifying (question, desire, supposition) acts. The initial problem is whether all acts or only objectifying ones are bearers of meanings; are meanings expressed only in judgment or also in question, desire, etc.? The problem of knowledge in the narrow sense of identifying the object is considered from the perspective of compatibility and conflict of intentions during realization. In this regard, a distinction is made between cognitive and intuitive intentions and stages of knowledge. The concluding chapter of Section I discusses the ideal of adequation in knowledge and the relationship between truth and obviousness. Four concepts of truth are introduced, and a distinction is made between being in the sense of truth and being of the connection in judgment. Husserl's reflections on being, tracing back to the well-known Kantian thesis, had a significant influence on the formulation of the question of being in Heidegger. In the second section, the consideration of objective categorical forms and ideal objectivity is revealed as a structure of categorical contemplation, founded in perception, but not reducible to sensory perceptions or purely intellectual activity. In this process, the concepts of perception and contemplation receive the necessary expansion. In the third, concluding section, a solution to the initial problem of the first section is presented. As an appendix, Husserl presented a small essay «External and Internal Perception, Physical and Mental Phenomena», which provides a critical analysis of Brentano’s position and attempts a different way of distinguishing the indicated phenomena. Also published is Husserl's abstract of «Logical Investigations». The edition is accompanied by an introductory article, subject and name indices for both parts of the second volume. For students and teachers of humanitarian specialties and for all those interested in contemporary philosophy.
