The history of our species would have developed quite differently if not for a fortunate genetic mutation that allowed our bodies to break down alcohol. Since then, humans have not parted with the bottle - for millennia, drinking has brought joy and solace, helped communicate with gods, and created culture. «A Brief History of Drunkenness» is the story of the long romance between Homo sapiens and alcohol. In every era - from the Stone Age to the Prohibition era - we will find answers to specific questions: what did people drink? how much? who and in what composition? And most importantly - why and on what occasion? Along the way, we will meet the Neolithic shamans who turned alcohol into a channel of communication with ancestors, attend the feasts of the ancient Greeks and Romans, and discover how the real saloons of the Wild West differed from Hollywood's versions.
