The culmination of the historical events of the second decade of the last century, which divided Russian society, was the Civil War, in the fiercest and most uncompromising confrontation of which 1.5 million Russian citizens were thrown beyond the borders...
of their homeland.
Thousands of Russian children, often orphaned, hungry, ragged, sick, and homeless, found themselves on the streets of foreign cities. The most important task of the Russian emigration was to care for them, and the Russian school helped to address this task.
Since the end of 1923, students of Russian schools in Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, and Turkey wrote 2400 essays on the topic "My Memories from 1917 until I entered Gymnasium." Their authors not only talked about what they had to endure in their homeland and during their wanderings but also about the role that the Russian national school played in their fate. From these individual stories, the history of a generation emerged - a generation whose childhood coincided with the tragic events in Russia that irrevocably changed the lives of its citizens.
