The first eight volumes of Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin's unique "History" (1766–1826) were published in 1818 in a print run of three thousand copies. For that time, it was a dangerously gigantic circulation. The price of all the books in the...
series was also enormous — 50 rubles; twice the monthly salary of a clerk. However, less than a month later, all the books were sold out! Karamzin's History was read by literally all the enlightened public of that time, for no one had written about native history like this before. And it was not just due to his magnificent knowledge of ancient manuscripts, which Karamzin studied for many years in the archives of the Synod, the Hermitage, the Academy of Sciences, the Public Library, Moscow University, and within the walls of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, nor was it only because of the impartial presentation of events, which conservatives considered "History" a dangerous work, while liberals saw it as a preach of monarchism. What primarily impressed the public was Karamzin's style of presentation. Before embarking on this gigantic task, the author had done immense work to modernize the literary language of his time. He made it alive and conversational. It is no coincidence that his "Letters of a Russian Traveler," written at the end of the 18th century, immediately brought him fame as a talented writer. However, later Karamzin interrupted his literary compositions and, in his own words, "became a historian." He was convinced that a systematic and complete exposition of native history, with all its bright and dark pages, was immeasurably more important for the formation of civic consciousness than any literary trifles. It is not for nothing that even today, Karamzin's "History" forms that solid foundation upon which all modern works recounting the history of our country rely. During his lifetime, Karamzin managed to complete his work up to the description of the end of the Time of Troubles. Later, all twelve volumes of his "History" were reprinted multiple times.
In creating his "History of the Russian State," Karamzin made numerous notes and extracts that have significant scientific value. However, they significantly increased the volume of the multi-volume edition, so the author decided to place these numerous details and specifics in a separate volume of notes, which you are holding in your hands. Familiarizing yourself with this book will expand your perception of the "History of the Russian State."
