The Living and the Dead Word

The Living and the Dead Word occupies a special place in the creative legacy of Nora Gal. This book, which was reissued three times during the author's lifetime, with each subsequent edition significantly revised and supplemented by Nora Gal, and later – six more times, represents one of the best works ever written in our country dedicated to the theory of literary translation. Nora Gal does not only analyze the most common mistakes of translators and demonstrates successful examples of translations, but also, summarizing her own literary experience, offers a concept of the ideal language of translation – alive and natural.
