Vladimir Nabokov resisted reading his prose through the prism of sketches and drafts. However, the complex narrative structure of his works, their stylistic intricacy, and ontological multiplicity can sometimes be revealed to the reader only when comparing the original idea and the final version of artistic texts, whether it be a novel, a short story, or an autobiographical narrative. "Cryptography: Nabokov. Archive. Subtext" represents an experience of archival interpretation of his works from the late 1930s to the mid-1950s: the memoirs "Other Shores," the novels "Camera Obscura," "Under the Sign of the Illegitimate," and "Pnin," and the short stories "Ultima Thule," "The Wain Sisters," and "Lance" through the carefully hidden codes or "keys" in Nabokov's manuscripts, diaries, and letters. The research includes the publication and analysis of the 1951 Diary, the draft ending of the novel "Camera Obscura" rejected by the author, the essay by V. E. Nabokov "On the Childhood of Dmitry," artfully woven into the last chapter of her husband's autobiography, as well as an overview of Nabokov's correspondence with "The New Yorker" editor Katharine White, which sheds light on the mysteries of "Pnin."
