Svyatoslav Vsevolodovich Medvedev is a specialist in neuro- and psychophysiology, an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the founder of the Institute of the Human Brain of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which he led for more than 30 years. He is the son of academician Natalia Petrovna Bekhtereva.
Scientific interests: healthy and diseased human brain, brain systems, brain mapping, error detection, altered states of consciousness, psychophysiology of meditations.
The main scientific results were obtained while studying the brain support of higher mental functions - attention, perception, speech, memory, cognitive activities in healthy and ill individuals.
In recent years, S. V. Medvedev has been leading research related to altered states of consciousness in Buddhist monks during life and post-mortem meditations. At the initiative of the XIV Dalai Lama, in 2019 two unique Russian laboratories were established in Tibetan monasteries in southern India to study these states.
Member of the National Committee of Russian Physiologists, member of the American and British Physiological Societies, International Organization of Psychophysiologists (IOP). Awarded the medal of the order 'For Merit to the Fatherland' II degree. Honored with the Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences named after V. M. Bekhterev for the cycle of works 'Functional Organization of Thinking'.
