The estate of Mikhaylovskoye, the ancestral home of Abram Hannibal, "the Moor of Peter the Great," was first visited by A. S. Pushkin in 1817, and for the last time in 1836; the poet's encounters with Mikhaylovskoye span two decades:...
he came here at different periods of his life. About a hundred works were created here, including the tragedy "Boris Godunov," chapters of the novel "Eugene Onegin," the poem "Count Nulin," and the poems "The Village," "The Prophet," "I remember a wonderful moment...," and "Once again I visited..." The poet sought refuge here in the most difficult moments of his life, and here, near the Svyatogorsky Monastery, he bequeathed to be buried.
"Pushkin in Mikhaylovskoye" is the main work of the famous Pushkin scholar Arkadiy Moiseevich Gordine (1913–1997). In 1939–1940, A. M. Gordine had the opportunity to take an active part in the creation of the first scientifically grounded exhibition at the Mikhaylovskoye estate; from 1945 to 1949, he served as the deputy director of the Pushkin Reserve for scientific affairs, and from 1957 to 1963, as the deputy director for scientific affairs of the All-Union Museum of A. S. Pushkin.
Relying on a vast range of factual material, including archival sources, the author engagingly describes the significance of Mikhaylovskoye in the poet's destiny. A. M. Gordine's book was published in 1989 and has since been reissued several times, remaining a classic of Pushkin studies.
