This publication is based on a unique book by the brilliant connoisseur of Russian art, Baron Nikolai Nikolaevich Wrangel (1880–1915), whose name has been forgotten during the Soviet period for well-known reasons. His work introduces readers to the history of... the creation of the first national museum of fine arts in Russia – the Russian Museum of Emperor Alexander III (since 1917 – State Russian Museum), as well as its masterpieces - the famous paintings by Bryullov, Aivazovsky, Shishkin, Surikov, Repin, and other great artists.

The documentary material collected by Nikolai Wrangel is extensive: excerpts from newspapers
and magazines, monographs, catalogs, archival documents, as well as interesting information about
the paintings provided by the artists themselves. The introductory articles familiarize readers with the history
of the Mikhailovsky Palace, where the Russian Museum is located, and with its creator – the great
architect Karl Ivanovich Rossi.
