Paul Gauguin. Big Atlas

Once the French painter Paul Gauguin was compared by his colleague Edgar Degas to the wolf from La Fontaine's fable. This hungry vagabond started a conversation with a rather plump dog, who was resting after a meal, sprawled out in a peasant's yard. The dog told the thin and hungry wolf that every day the owner fed her and surrounded her with care. Such an easy life appealed to the wolf, and he decided to stay with the peasants. But then he saw the chain to which the dog was tied. Would he have to sacrifice his freedom as well? Never! It was the same for Gauguin. He left women and children, severed friendships, and gave up a promising career. All for the sake of painting. Life threw Gauguin into different corners of the earth: from England, Denmark, and Spain to Martinique, Tahiti, and Hiva Oa, an island in the Pacific Ocean, where he painted the works that, after his death, made him famous worldwide.
