The name of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov is a special page in the history of Russian theatrical art. The legendary success of "The Seagull," staged in 1898 by K. S. Stanislavsky and V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko, paved the way for a new type of drama on stage and marked the birth of the director's theater. The Seagull became a symbol of the Moscow Art Theatre: the image of a white soaring bird adorned its curtain. The subtlety of psychological characterization, the famous Chekhov pauses and subtext, the musicality and symphonism of Chekhov's dramatic works anticipated many stage discoveries of the 20th century. According to one of the foremost researchers of Chekhov's work, A. P. Chudakov, it was Chekhov’s dramaturgy that became "the treasure from which all modern theatrical trends draw and continue to draw - from symbolism to the theater of the absurd." Indeed, today it is impossible to imagine a theatrical repertoire without Chekhov's plays.
This edition includes Chekhov’s most famous dramatic works - the vaudevilles "The Bear", "The Proposal", "The Wedding," the drama "Ivanov," as well as the world-renowned "The Seagull," "Uncle Vanya," "Three Sisters," and "The Cherry Orchard." The book features photographs from famous domestic and foreign productions of Chekhov’s dramaturgy: from the theatrical experiments of the Moscow Art Theatre, which gave true life to Chekhov’s plays, to the legendary performances of Georgy Tovstonogov, Anatoly Efros, Giorgio Strehler, and Peter Brook.
