Edda was the eldest and favored child of the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, the wife of Count Galeazzo Ciano, the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, and one of the most influential women in Europe during the 1930s. Incredibly strong-willed, extremely intelligent, and charming, this woman had to endure colossal hardships and losses: the execution of her husband by her father's order; renunciation of her dictator father and his political views; escape to Switzerland; arrest and exile on charges of aiding fascists; a further life with a stigma on the entire family. This book is dedicated not only to the tragic story of Edda Mussolini (Ciano) but also to the history of Italy and the horrifying power of fascism, to how it firmly established itself in a country weakened by war and on a continent engulfed in chaos and desperately seeking peace. The book is based on archival materials, some of which have been recently published, as well as memoirs and interviews.
