Painted Karamzin. Russian History in Pictures

The book, which combines two legendary names - historian Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin (1766-1826) and artist Boris Artemyevich Chorikov (1802-1866) - is one of the masterpieces of Russian publishing in the 19th century.
Released in 1836 by the St. Petersburg publisher Andrei Prevo, "Painted Karamzin" instantly became a bestseller - largely due to the engravings of Boris Chorikov, whose work was highly appreciated by the Imperial Academy of Arts. The text of the book, based on Karamzin's "History", was compiled by journalists V. M. Stroyev and B. M. Fedorov.
The battle scenes and portraits of figures from Russian history created by Chorikov, rich in drama and psychological depth, embody the spirit of romantic and reverent attitude towards the history of the Fatherland, characteristic of Karamzin's text.
