«In the Editor's Laboratory» — one of the three most important books dedicated to the purity and richness of the Russian language (the other two: «The Living and the Dead Word» by Nora Gal and «The High Art» by Korney Chukovsky). In her book, Lydia Chukovskaya shares her experience of working in the legendary editing office of Detgiz, recalls great contemporary writers, and discusses the principles of creating and formatting text, as well as editorial censorship widespread in the Soviet era. According to the author: «this book is not a textbook on editing. I do not set educational tasks for myself, and it is unlikely that any textbook can serve to master the art to any extent. The task of the book is different: I simply wanted to understand the experience accumulated by me and my closest associates, to gather and summarize it, to introduce the reader to the circle of thoughts, concerns, and questions that I have encountered over three decades of literary work.».
