Our perceptions of open source are vastly different from reality. The optimistic model of public collaboration has long been a thing of the past, and now it's a realm of loners.
Not long ago, information was quality-driven, and the rule was...
— the more, the better. Suddenly, there became too much information. The more notifications we receive, the less attention we pay to them. In the world of open source software, it works exactly the same way. Work implies collective interaction, but the developers who write and publish code are so overwhelmed by various requests that they simply stop responding to them.
Open Source is the "roads and bridges" of the digital world. The start of work is always associated with a significant investment of effort and resources, but each additional user costs relatively little. We do not notice them as long as everything is fine, we perceive them as something owed, but most of these projects are created by enthusiasts.
How can a contemporary creator develop a strategy, create a product, provide support, and earn revenue?
Nadia Egbal analyzed the GitHub platform to tell us what modern open source projects are, written by individual developers but used by millions.
