The Trap

In the Parisian quarter of workers and the poor, laundress Gervais Macquart dreams of simple happiness: honest work, her own business, a clean home, and a serene life next to her loved one. Abandoned by her beloved and left with two children, she finds the strength to start anew – marries, opens a laundry, and for a brief moment approaches that modest, hard-won dream which seems to her the limit of earthly well-being. But the world in which Gervais lives does not forgive weakness. Poverty, envy, fatigue, male cowardice, and the destructive power of the tavern gradually tighten around her, turning hope into humiliation, work into exhaustion, and love into dependency. 'The Trap' is one of the most piercing novels by Émile Zola, a merciless story of a man's downfall, doomed not only by his own mistakes but by the very environment: narrow, dirty, indifferent, as if it had set a trap from the very beginning.
