The novel is based on real events during World War II and is dedicated to the tragic fate of the Arctic convoy PQ-17, which in 1942 was heading from Great Britain to the USSR with military cargo.
The plot unfolds around the preparation and departure of the convoy, consisting of merchant ships and escort vessels. The author depicts the tense situation: the threat from the German fleet, aviation, and submarines, the harsh conditions of the Arctic, and the operation's dependence on the decisions of the higher command.
A key moment becomes the fateful order of the British Admiralty to disperse the convoy due to the threat of an attack by the German battleship «Tirpitz». Left unprotected, the vessels become easy prey for the enemy. A tragedy begins: ships sink one after another, sailors find themselves in icy water and desperate conditions.
Pikul not only describes the course of the disaster but also reveals the fates of individual people — sailors, officers, commanders. Through their experiences, fear, courage, sense of duty, and the tragedy of the events are conveyed.
The novel raises themes of responsibility for decisions made, the cost of command errors, and the heroism of ordinary people. It is not only a military chronicle but also an emotional reflection on one of the most dramatic pages in the maritime history of World War II.
