The end of the 21st century. Humanity has become extinct, leaving only the remnants of its civilization. Nature has once again become the rightful mistress of the planet. While the world was recovering, primates continued to evolve: they began to...
gather in tribes and then started to master the human tools and other artifacts they found. They awakened a thirst for knowledge, and your task as the leaders of such tribes is to lead your fellow tribesmen to a higher level of intelligence!
“After Us” is a deck building and resource management game. At the beginning of the game, you will lead a tribe of monkeys consisting only of a few tamarins. However, by teaching them to work together, you will be able to gather resources to attract other monkeys to your tribe - gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, and mandrills, who will bring you even more development opportunities. Collect combinations from monkey cards to gain as many closed frames as possible, bringing resources, energy, bonuses, and of course, victory points. To win, be the first to score 80 victory points - thus, your tribe will ascend to a new level of intelligence and enlightenment.
“After Us” features beautiful artwork by Vincent Dutrait, as well as an interesting connection between theme and mechanics. In the game, there are 5 types of primates with their unique properties. For example, chimpanzees, which in real life love to mimic others, allow you to use frame effects more than once per turn, while gorillas are responsible for rage - a resource that allows you to remove cards from your tribe.
How to play?
The game lasts several rounds until one of the players scores 80 or more victory points.
Each round consists of 3 phases.
1. Gathering the tribe
All players simultaneously reveal the top 4 cards of their stacks and then place them in any order on the table in front of themselves - these are their monkey tribes. Once the cards are laid out, players apply the effects of all closed frames on their tribe cards. The application of frame effects starts from the top row and goes left to right. Some frames immediately provide resources or VP, while others require players to meet a specific condition to use the effect.
2. Attracting new monkeys
Players simultaneously choose one of their monkey tokens and place it face down in front of their player board. Then all tokens are flipped. Participants receive the bonuses indicated on the token, and then can attract 1 monkey of the chosen kind to their tribe, paying the necessary resources and taking the corresponding card. The player places the new card on top of their stack.
3. Rest
Each player discards their tribe cards, placing them in their discard pile to the right of their player board. Players return their monkey tokens.
The game ends when one of the players scores 80 VP or more. If multiple players reach 80 VP in the same phase, the one who scored the most VP wins.
