Vladimir Obruchev — a scientist of world renown, geographer, geologist, researcher of Siberia and Central Asia. However, he is best known to the general public as the author of science fiction and adventure novels that have entered the treasure trove...
of adventure literature.
The idea for «Plutonia» (1924) was born in Obruchev after reading «Journey to the Center of the Earth» by Jules Verne — an engaging novel, but one that does not withstand scientific criticism. And Vladimir Afanasyevich, although he did not believe in the hypothesis of the «hollow Earth», decided to write a book with a similar plot, but free from absurdities.
The second novel, «The Land of Sannikov» (1926), was based on another scientific hypothesis, which seemed to the scientist more realistic. In 1811, the St. John's wort man Yakov Sannikov discovered an «extensive land», a true oasis in the East Siberian Sea. This gave grounds to think that the land is warm and fertile, possibly due to volcanoes. A group of pioneers sets out to explore this land.
The adventure novel «Gold Seekers in the Desert» (1949) transports the reader to the Dzungarian mountains, rich in gold-bearing quartz. Extracting the precious metal is not easy, and guarding the find is even more difficult — for the action takes place in the 19th century on the western outskirts of the Chinese Empire, which is going through hard times of civil wars, uprisings, and turmoil.
The current edition also includes the novella «The Coral Island» (1947). Like «Plutonia», this is also a kind of tribute to the talent of Jules Verne. But now, the crew of an American military seaplane, flying to the attacked Pearl Harbor, ends up on a mysterious island...
The edition is illustrated with illustrations by Georgy Nikolsky and works by European and American artists.
