The life of the protagonist of the novel, Kazhimurat, a man of extraordinary strength and unyielding character, was not easy. Abandoned by his father, who fled abroad, the boy faced many hardships. But a difficult childhood did not erase the good nature within him, which helped him become a true person. Through the memories of Kazhimurat and other heroes of this narrative, the scenes of the war years come to life, when in labor and in the joint struggle against fascism, the friendship of the nations strengthened. Kazhimurat mentally walked through each of the fifty courtyards and calculated that one hundred and twenty young men had left the aul. "What would the aul have been like if all of them had returned alive and healthy!" thought Kazhimurat. "Not just an aul, but a whole country!" But half of them had already received burial notices; the young men perished on the battlefield, and some are still missing... How many will return home safe and sound, in which houses will happiness enter, in how many women's eyes will light up? Many homes have become empty... All four sons of old Zhussup, his own brother, and two sons of Trofim, the husband of Shamshinur, are gone...
