1904. The titular counselor Vladislav Sergeyevich Shchelkuno has gone missing. The search is entrusted to investigator Ivan Volovtsov, who specializes in particularly important cases. According to witnesses, recently, the victim was extremely dissatisfied with something. Shchelkuno's office is turned upside... down – it is clear that something was being searched for there. A local janitor reported that on the day the titular counselor went missing, a stranger 'about fifty years old' left their house. Perhaps this was the robber or the murderer... Suddenly, news arrives that in the Moscow Region, the body of an unknown man has been discovered, bearing a distinctive mark of an intimate nature. Could something similar have been found on Shchelkuno's body?
