Did the Earth research expedition make the right choice by interrupting its journey to its destination for the sake of the Chalice of the Heavens — an unimaginably large artifact suddenly discovered in interstellar space? The temptation to study the Chalice is all the greater as it could become a refuge for millions of Earthlings... If it were not already home to some beings that look very little like humans. A complex ecosystem, amazing landscapes, and the incredible forms that intelligence can take — all this confronts a group of researchers who are being pursued by the owners of the Chalice. But are they really its owners? Who created it? And for what purpose? Earthlings will have to find this out and, at the same time, discover something that will overturn their understanding of the Universe and allow them to view humanity's place in the cosmos in a new light. Meanwhile, in orbit around the Chalice, the captain of the "Star Seeker" and his crew struggle with their own problems. And although their ship is not a military one, every starship wandering in deep space can become a formidable weapon capable of inflicting significant damage to the colossal artifact before them.
