The caustic mocker of Julius Caesar, beloved of Lesbia, Gaius Valerius Catullus wrote his "trifles" without thinking that they would become favored works for translations by Fet, Pushkin, Trediakovsky, Bryusov, and other iconic names of Russian poetry. Legend has it that he lived a short (hardly more than thirty years), but bright life, leaving behind several dozen beautiful lyrical texts that continue to inspire people to dreams and philosophical musings to this day.
