We present to the readers the book of one of the greatest Spanish writers of the late 19th - early 20th century, Ramón del Valle-Inclán (1866-1936). Ramón María del Valle-Inclán y de la Peña (1866-1936) belongs to the so-called "generation of...
catastrophe," i.e., to the group of writers whose literary activity flourished in the era immediately following the Spanish-American War of 1898-1899. Starting with anarchism, Valle-Inclán gradually became a defender of the ideas of "church, homeland, and king." He expresses the sentiments of that part of the Spanish intelligentsia - primarily, the clerically inclined urban circles - which sees the salvation of Spain in a return to the "pure" traditions of Spanish medieval and Renaissance. The writer's favorite hero is the Marquis de Bradomin, the main character of his "Sonatas" - a modern Don Juan, unattractive, Catholic-minded, and sentimental. In this romantic figure, Valle-Inclán sought to resurrect the traditional type of "Spanish hidalgo." The book contains an unadapted text of the novellas, accompanied by comments and a dictionary.
