When Harper Lee was only five years old, in the small town of Scottsboro, Alabama, trials were taking place regarding the alleged rapes of two white women by nine young black men. The suspects were... almost lynched even before the trial. Despite a medical report stating that the women were not raped, a jury composed solely of white members found the defendants guilty and sentenced all of them to death, except for the youngest, a thirteen-year-old. Over the next six years, during the appeals process, most of these charges were dropped, and all defendants, except for one, were released. This story made a strong impression on the girl, and in 1961, the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" was published, instantly becoming a bestseller. It is based on the "Scottsboro Case".
