Alexey Silych Novikov-Priboy, real name Alexey Silanteyevich Novikov (1877-1944) – Russian, Soviet writer-marinist and publicist. His life resembles a true adventure novel. Drafted into the army, A.S. Novikov enlisted in the navy, was arrested in 1903 for revolutionary propaganda, and... later, as a "subversive," was transferred to the battleship "Orel" of the 2nd Pacific Squadron. He participated in the Battle of Tsushima, was captured by the Japanese, and after deportation, fled to Europe in 1907. After amnesty, he returned to Russia in 1913. During World War I, he worked on hospital trains and in 1918 fought in Kolchak's army. In Soviet Russia, he was a member of the editorial board of the magazine "Znamya" and engaged in writing activities. In his works, starting with his first sea stories, Novikov-Priboy widely used facts from his own biography. But his main literary work of his life became the novel "Tsushima," which narrates the events of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. This work, based not only on the materials from the writer's own archive but also on the memories of his comrades, tells about the voyage of the 2nd Pacific Squadron across seas and oceans, the life and service of military sailors, and the crushing defeat of the Russian fleet in the Battle of Tsushima.
