Alexei Silych Novikov-Priboy, real name Alexei Silantevich Novikov (1877-1944) – Russian, Soviet writer-marinist and publicist. His life resembles a true adventure novel. Drafted into the army, A.S. Novikov enrolled in the navy, was arrested in 1903 for revolutionary propaganda, and...
later transferred as an "unreliable" person to the battleship "Eagle" of the 2nd Pacific Squadron.
He participated in the Battle of Tsushima, was captured by the Japanese, and after deportation, escaped to Europe in 1907. After an amnesty, he returned to Russia in 1913. During World War I, he worked on sanitary trains, and in 1918, he fought in Kolchak's army. In Soviet Russia, he was a member of the editorial board of the magazine "Znamenya" and engaged in literary activity. In his works, starting from his first sea stories, Novikov-Priboy widely used facts from his own biography. But the main literary work of his entire life became the novel "Tsushima," which tells about the events of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905.
This work, based on materials from not only the writer's own archive but also on the memories of his comrades-in-arms, recounts the voyage of the 2nd Pacific Squadron through seas and oceans, the life and service of military sailors, and the crushing defeat of the Russian fleet in the Battle of Tsushima.
