Poland, 1944. A train brings the huge family of 15-year-old Sara Leibovitz to Auschwitz from Hungary. Sara's mother and younger brothers are almost immediately sent to the gas chambers. Her father is forced to work in the Sonderkommando — burning the dead bodies in the crematorium. Sara herself ends up in the women's block and works sorting the belongings of the prisoners. Very soon she is left alone — covering up the traces of crimes, the Nazis execute witnesses, including her father.
After her father's death, Sara helps the other prisoners survive. Risking her life, she passes notes and packages, devises ways to avoid the gas chamber during roll calls, and swaps places with a woman during selection for forced labor. Several times, she miraculously escapes death thanks to the help of other prisoners and survives until the arrival of the Russian soldiers in Auschwitz.
