Olga Fedorovna Berggolts is a legendary Leningrad poetess who was the 'voice of the City' for almost nine hundred days of the blockade: while remaining in besieged Leningrad, she addressed her fellow citizens over the radio, and her words helped... them maintain their spirit and hope. She was called the 'Leningrad Madonna' and honored, in the words of Daniil Granin, 'as one honors the blessed, the saints.' However, Olga Berggolts is a poet not only of civil issues but also of immense lyrical strength. Her personal story was tragic: she lost loved ones more than once, endured the death of children, war, and the shattering of faith in revolutionary ideals... All of this is also embodied in her poetry. The current edition includes the best works of the poetess.
