Despite prolonged searches, the remains of their bodies were only found several months later, and the evidence discovered has led to the emergence of numerous theories regarding their mysterious death.

Investigators were shocked by the images on Lisanne's camera, found along with the other belongings in the backpack. It contained 133 photographs taken between April 1 and 8, and the former head of the Dutch investigative team, Frank van de Goot, described the night photos as "ominous" and compared them to a horror movie.
