Rome Against Macedonia

The Macedonian wars are four major confrontations between the Roman Republic and Macedonia, as a result of which Rome came to dominate the Balkans. The first war was initiated by King Philip V of Macedonia. Having concluded an alliance with... Carthage in 215 BC, after Hannibal's victory at Cannae, he attempted to seize Illyria - a region in the northwest Balkans. However, the Romans managed to provoke a war against Macedonia with the alliance of the Aetolian states. As a result, Philip was unable to seize Illyria or assist the Carthaginians in Italy. The Second Macedonian War was started in 200 BC by the Romans. Philip's forces were defeated at the Battle of Cynoscephalae in 197 BC. At that time, peace was concluded, according to which Macedonia surrendered the overwhelming part of its fleet to Rome, agreed to reduce its army to 5,000 men, and not wage wars against Roman allies.
