«Exhibition projects are arranged not by chronology, but by the area of the exhibition spaces for which they were created, — from the smallest, a few square meters, to huge territories covering dozens of hectares. For the reader's convenience, the book is divided into sections S, M, L, XL, XXL. Not all projects collected here were realized, but all of them were experienced by me as completed in their own right, so I did not specify where the project reached the final stage of author supervision and where it did not. Almost all projects are accompanied by explanatory notes, some of them are accompanied by stories recorded later as memories. Therefore, I thought that this book would be not just my portfolio and not a textbook on exhibition design, but a guide through the time in which they were created».
Yuri Avvakumov, architect, artist, and curator, shares in this book examples from his own museum and exhibition practice. In total, more than a hundred projects for 30 cities in 15 countries of the world are presented here: this list includes Amsterdam, Berlin, Venice, Vladikavkaz, Paris, San Francisco, Tokyo, and others. Each project is accompanied by explanatory notes and margin comments. The body of projects is preceded by 33 short essays on the design of visual art exhibitions, and concludes with selected articles by the author devoted to exhibition design.
