The Miraculous Journey of Nils Holgersson with the Wild Geese

The restless and lazy boy Nils Holgersson was once severely punished for his mischief: a forest gnome enchanted him, and Nils turned into a tiny little man. Along with that, he suddenly began to understand the language of birds and beasts, whom he had so often harmed before.

Together with a flock of wild geese, Nils sets off to faraway Lapland, overcoming dangers, meeting new friends, and learning kindness, courage, and responsibility. But will he earn the forgiveness of the forest gnome, and will he be able to become an ordinary boy again?

Written over a century ago, Selma Lagerlöf's book remains one of the most beloved magical stories in children's literature. It was first translated into Russian in the early 20th century, soon after it was published in Sweden. This edition features the most popular retelling translation prepared by the remarkable translators and the first editors of the legendary Detgiz, Alexandra Lyubarskaya and Zoya Zadunayskaya. The verses in the fairy tale novella are written by S. Ya. Marshak.

The book has been adapted for the screen multiple times, and children are well acquainted with the animated film created based on it. It is included in recommended reading lists for elementary school
