Every day, Dagfrid performs boring and monotonous tasks: she sews in the light of an oil lamp, shears sheep's wool, helps her mother cook the hated fish, or tidies up the house.
For the other girl Vikings, these chores seem to be no burden, which cannot be said about Dagfrid, who dreams of going on a grand journey and discovering new lands.
One day, her grandmother brings Dagfrid the "joyful" news -- she has been honored with the task of preparing a lavish feast for the chieftains' banquet.
The girl is outraged by the situation also because, in their village, only boys can become warriors and seafarers.
Like her brother Odalrik, although it seems he is not interested in anything at all, as he hasn't even learned to catch fish at his sixteen years of age.
Meanwhile, the time for the evening meal approaches, and then the resourceful heroine comes up with a sudden idea…
