The novel by the famous Jewish writer, Nobel Prize laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904–1991) "Charlatan" was published in the newspaper "Forverts" in 1967–1968, then was released in English translation and in Yiddish. Its characters are Jews living in America in... the early 1940s. All of them fled from Nazism and by the beginning of the action had managed to settle down more or less in the new place. Each of their lives unfolds in three dimensions: on one hand, they crave to settle comfortably and enjoy all kinds of pleasures. On the other hand, they constantly think about their relatives and loved ones left in Poland, who are most likely already dead or doomed. And on the third hand, they do not forget their Jewish heritage and try to engage in a dialogue with God, justifying or explaining to Him each of their actions, which is far from the notions of religious morality and simple decency.
