Nikolai Albertovich Kuhn (1877-1940) - a Russian historian, writer. On his mother's side, he came from an ancient noble family, while his father's family (the surname Kuhn - German) had German and Anglo-Scottish roots. Nikolai Albertovich was an outstanding graduate...
of the historical and philological faculty of Moscow University, where among other subjects, Greek and Roman literature and antiquity were studied, which forever became the center of his interests. Although Kuhn wrote many books, including "Tales of African Peoples," "Tales of Gypsies," "Tales of the Peoples of the Great Ocean Islands," and the translation of "Letters of Dark People" (a German satire on scholasticism), he is best known as the author of the book "Legends and Myths of Ancient Greece."
The book "Legends and Myths of Ancient Greece" was first published in 1922 and has since been reissued many times, translated into the languages of the peoples of the USSR and the main European languages. Interestingly, it was originally titled "What the Ancient Greeks and Romans Told About Their Gods and Heroes." Under the title "Legends and Myths of Ancient Greece," the edition was released after the author's death, with changes made to it.
This edition publishes a part of the book: the myth describing the legendary hero of Greece, Hercules - a strongman with superhuman power who accomplished 12 great feats; a mortal who earned his ascension to the bright Olympus, among the immortal ones. The events in Kuhn's book are based on the tragedies of the ancient Greek playwrights Sophocles and Euripides and the ancient tales of the 2nd century mythographer and historian Pausanias.
