Ivo Andric (1892-1975) is the only Yugoslav writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for the novel "Bridge on the Drina," covering about four centuries — from the heyday of the Ottoman Empire to the beginning of the... 20th century. The central image, which has become fundamental to the entire work, is the bridge over the Drina River in the town of Višegrad. The bridge, like a silent witness, remembers all the times when it connected or divided various cultures, faiths, traditions, and civilizations — the East and the West. In the novel, the author not only describes real historical events of the region but also accurately portrays the lifestyle and customs of the peculiar multinational community that emerged in the territory of Višegrad and the entire Balkan Peninsula, weaving into the narrative legends and traditions, fairy tales, and myths born in this unique environment.
