Great Russian Navigators

Russian navigators made a worthy contribution to the expansion of knowledge about our planet. Their achievements include the discovery of Antarctica, the northwest coasts of North America, the strait dividing America and Eurasia, the exploration of the Commander, Aleutian, Kuril Islands, New Land, and the coast of the Arctic Ocean, as well as the description of the Marquesas, Mariana, and Hawaiian Islands. The best naval officers, who gained invaluable experience in navigation across the ocean expanses, took part in these voyages. On ships participating in circumnavigational voyages, corporal punishment was generally not practiced, yet exemplary discipline was maintained. Long sea expeditions also had a huge impact on the formation of the domestic fleet.
