Great Russian Navigators

Russian navigators made a worthy contribution to expanding knowledge about our planet. Their achievements include the discovery of Antarctica, the northwest coasts of North America, the strait separating America and Eurasia, the exploration of the Commander Islands, Aleutian Islands, Kuril Islands, New Siberia, and the coasts of the Arctic Ocean, as well as the description of the Marquesas, Mariana, and Hawaiian Islands. The best maritime officers participated in these voyages, gaining invaluable experience in navigating the ocean expanses. On the ships involved in the circumnavigation voyages, corporal punishment was usually not practiced, but exemplary discipline was maintained. Long sea expeditions also had a huge impact on the formation of the domestic fleet.
