Spellbound by the charming exterior and unspoiled soul of the young Dorian Gray, the artist Basil Hallward paints his portrait. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the young man in the painting is as captivating as he is in life. Hallward believes that the portrait of Dorian Gray is his strongest work, but he does not yet know how devastating the power of art can be. Dorian's beauty and innocence are noticed by Henry Wotton—a friend of the artist, a worldly gentleman, and a hedonist. Lord Henry sees in the inexperienced youth a wonderful subject for study and plants the idea in his mind that the meaning of life lies in pleasures and indulging base passions. When a carelessly expressed wish by Dorian Gray to remain forever young comes true, the moral degradation of the young man begins. Meanwhile, the physical decay catches up with the image in the portrait. It turns out that beauty is indeed a terrible power...
