The book by Whitney Chadwick is one of the most comprehensive works on the history of art from the Middle Ages to the present day, viewed through a feminist lens. It is a work about women who chose painting, sculpture,... or related fields as their profession, as well as the ideologies that shaped women's creativity and its representation. Chadwick traces the movement of art (and art history) as a narrative initially aimed at men, relegating women to the role of object, and then evolving into the modern art history where the female artist plays the role of an independent creator. This edition is supplemented with a concluding chapter on the development of feminist art theory from the 1970s to the 2010s.
