The book by Whitney Chadwick is one of the most comprehensive studies on the history of art from the Middle Ages to the present day, examined through a feminist lens. This work is about women who chose painting, sculpture, or related fields as their profession, as well as the ideologies that shaped women's creativity and its representation. Chadwick traces the movement of art (and art history) as a narrative initially aimed at men, relegating women to the role of objects, and then evolving into a contemporary art history where the woman artist plays the role of an independent creator. This edition is supplemented by a final chapter on the development of feminist art theory from the 1970s to the 2010s.
