The Yellow Wife

Phoebe Dolores Brown, the daughter of a Black healer and a white plantation owner, does not feel like a slave at all: she has access to the master’s house, the owner's sister teaches her reading and music, and he himself... promises to grant her freedom after she turns eighteen. But the vengeful planter's wife sends her to a slave auction, and then Phoebe has to realize the full horror of her situation. Beaten and humiliated, the girl ends up in the Lapin prison — a terrible place where Black people are traded like cattle… Thus begins the quiet war of Phoebe Brown: an unnoticed battle of a brave little woman against violence, abuse, and the deprivation of dignity of some people by others — against slavery.
