At the Hour of the Crow

In a small town near the Appalachians, local traditions are still alive. People paint the walls of their houses blue to ward off evil spirits and say that black ferns grow where death will soon come. Agnes Wilder—a devout and domineering old woman—rules her granddaughter Weatherly with an iron hand because she possesses a rare gift: the girl can talk death away. Weatherly wants to leave the town and escape her grandmother's control, but she becomes a hostage to her gift, as someone may die while she is not around. Weatherly's best friend and cousin, Adair, also has a gift: she can see the future. Just before getting into an accident, Adair saw something frightening. Weatherly knows about this and is certain that the vision is somehow connected to the town's mayor, who, upon learning about it, decides to get rid of the seer. But when the mayor's son dies, and Weatherly cannot speak him back from death for the first time, the entire town suspects that she intentionally did not save him. Weatherly, with the help of a soul guide, intends to prove her innocence and find her cousin's killer, no matter the cost.
