Tove Jansson was born on August 9, 1914, in Helsinki. Her parents were the sculptor Victor Jansson and the illustrator Signe Hammarsten-Jansson. Tove Jansson came to writing through painting. She attended art schools in Helsinki and Stockholm and made numerous study trips through Germany, France, and Italy. She became known for her stories about the beloved Moomins. Her books have been translated into 33 languages and adapted for television, radio, film, and theater. For her work, Tove Jansson received numerous awards and was also honored with an honorary doctorate. In 1952, she received the literary award established by Stockholm newspapers for the best children's book, in 1952 the Nils Holgersson Medal established in memory of Selma Lagerlöf, and in 1996 the International Hans Christian Andersen Award. Tove Jansson passed away in 2001.
