The charming, cheerful and energetic rogue Figaro is Beaumarchais's most famous character. The illegitimate child of a respected doctor and a maid, kidnapped as a child by gypsies, Figaro had many jobs and wandered around Spain a lot before settling in Seville. Thanks to his quick wits, resourcefulness, and ability to get out of any mess and find himself here and there, Figaro first achieved success as a barber, and then made a career as an indispensable servant of Count Almaviva. The bright image of Figaro was so consistent with the expectations and hopes of the public of that time that he quickly turned into a people's favorite, and his name became a household name.
