Translation from English by Boris Pasternak and Samuel Marshak
Savva Brodsky, an architect by profession, illustrated several dozen books. He often approached graphics as an architect — constructing the artistic space of the printed edition. While illustrating Shakespeare in the early...
1980s, Brodsky staged a true book spectacle. The characters are arranged in scenes against the backdrop of the receding arches of the castle of Danish kings or an Italian Renaissance city. “The audience sees all the characters at once, but some come to the forefront, into a circle outlined by light, while others smoothly recede into the distance. While working on this book, I felt somewhat like a theatrical director,” recalled the artist. The illustration-decorations rhythmically change: the area in front of the castle transforms into a portrait gallery and then into a throne room; the streets of the city become the interior of a cathedral, and later turn into the heroine's bedroom. It seems natural that the visual image of the famous saying by Shakespeare precedes the series of plot turns: “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”
