Helena Hannemann and her family move to Berlin in search of a better life. In the big city, one can dissolve, and this is the best way to survive in the new Germany — to become invisible. But Helena's worst... fears come true when her virtuoso violinist husband is first fired from the Berlin Conservatory and then arrested along with their children by SS orders. Because they all have Roma roots. Although Helena is German and this arrest does not apply to her, she refuses to abandon her family. Despite the physical and emotional brutality of the conditions in Auschwitz, Helena protects the children in her care until the very end. She maintains her dignity even when it seems that all hope is lost. The book has two endings: an artistic and a real one, and each reader decides for themselves how the story of Helena and her family will end.
