Tenderness

In the hills of Sussex and on the shores of the Mediterranean, D. H. Lawrence (for some, a modern classic, for others, a notorious troublemaker and apologist for obscenity) gathers impressions for his latest novel tentatively titled "Tenderness," which will become scandalously famous as "Lady Chatterley's Lover." In 1928, the official publication of this book is impossible — and the terminally ill Lawrence, in despair, privately prints it in Italy, with a print run of 1000 copies. Thirty years later, the public climate changes, new winds begin to blow — and so first the Grove Press in the USA, and then Penguin Books in England decide to publish the complete, unabridged version, fully aware that they risk being prosecuted; and their fears were not unfounded. 

With journalistic meticulousness, Alison MacLeod recounts the chronicles of both trials that had historical significance for freedom of speech, and with loving care, she paints portraits of the fighters for this freedom. For the first time in Russian — "a hymn to freedom and creative imagination" (Madeline Miller) from an author who is "capable of any accomplishments" (Elizabeth Gilbert).
