The Master and Margarita. A Theatrical Novel

The novel "The Master and Margarita" became the most complex work of the writer. The author began writing the book in the late 1920s but could not finish it — the editing of the novel was completed by the writer's widow after his death. A multi-level and multifaceted novel about the devil and his entourage, who honored Moscow of the 1930s with their presence, about the procurator of Judea, the knight Pontius Pilate, and the poor philosopher Yeshua Ha-Notsri, about the talented and unhappy Master and his beautiful and faithful lover Margarita.

"A Theatrical Novel" is an exciting, sometimes funny, sometimes sad and tragic tale about the everyday and backstage life of the most famous Russian theater of the 20th century – the Moscow Art Theater (MXAT), as well as about the fate of the writer and his manuscript. There is a wide variety of characters and events! It is a kind of chronicle of the "trials" of a young author (in which one can easily recognize Bulgakov himself and his play "Days of the Turbins") through theatrical and artistic Moscow. Among the people he meets are many famous writers, theater figures, and stage stars of the 1930s – from Alexei Tolstoy, Stanislavsky, and Nemirovich-Danchenko to Olga Knipper-Chekhova and Valentin Katayev.
