The artist Asle lives in Dylgju. He mainly interacts only with his neighbor, a single fisherman named Asleik. Occasionally, he has conversations with another artist struggling with alcohol dependence, also named Asle. Both Asles are friends and, in some sense, represent two versions of the same life.

On Christmas Eve, one of them finds the other in a snowdrift. In saving his comrade from a cold death, the hero remembers the past and begins to look at friendship, faith, and creativity in a new way.
